Large parts of Jutland was originally heath. Dalgas discovered a way to cultivate the heath and use it for agriculture. There are still some heath in Jutland, and few other parts of Denmark.

Lot of Danes spend their weekends in the summertime camping. It is a fun, friendly society on camps around the country. Some have the caravan on the same spot for years, while others drive around and visit camps all over the country, or rest of Europe for that matter.

Remnants of summer

I found this in the woods. Several months earlier someone had a great time with a one-time barbecue. The plastic bag and the metal from the barbecue was still available, 6+ months later. Oh, well :-(

Long dark tunnel

A tunnel below the rails in Albertslund. It is part of a system of paths reserved for cyclinbg and walking between Taastrup and Albertslund. A good place to walk the dog or just enjoy nature.

This must be the modern version of a pier worker. No more dirty clothes and har physical labour. A sunny day, an laptop and a thermos with coffee is the modern worker seen at the harbour. This picture is from the part of Copenhagen known as Christianshavn.

The picture is from Danmarks Akvarium (Denmark's Aquarium) a large collection of live fish and sea creatures from all over the world. Some of the animals are part of the "petting zoo", where you can touch the animals under water.

Even though we are in Scandinavia in Northern Europe, snow is not as common as one should think. At least not this winter. But today we got what we deserved :-)

Our bicycles in our garden almost totally covered, the car look like af white dune and work was done from home. Oh well, soon it will be over...

Major tourist attraction in Copenhagen - Rundetaarn

The Round Tower (Rundetårn) is a tower attached to Church of Trinitatis. The tower was built in the 16th century. It is possible to walk all the way up inside. There are no stairs just a long winding path to the top.

Church tower in evening winter sun

This is a church in Taastrup. It is called Taastrup New Church (Taastryp Nykirke). It is not that new, but just less old than the previous one.

The photo is shot in the late evening, just before sunset in December 2006. That is why the tower looks yellowish. It is actually white.

Netto is a chain of low-price (discount) stores owned by Dansk Supermarked (a chain of major supermarkets). Netto stores are widely spread across the country. This store is located in Gladsaxe.

Ivy cover

A house overgrown by ivy. It looks great when done properly. This house is in the town Nykøbing Falster, on the island Falster in south eastern part of Denmark.

Land of ferries

Denmark is known for its ferries. This is mainly due to the fact, that there is several islands, Funen (danish: Fyn) and Zealand (danish: Sjælland) are the largest, but there are several smaller habitated islands.

Ferries connect several parts of the country, like Zealand and Jutland for instance competing with bridges between Zealand and Funen and Funen and Jutland. Other ferries sail to Sweden, Germany, Norway and Great Britain. The ferry on the picture sails between Rødby, Denmark and Puttgarten, Germany.

This is the front entrance to the candy store at the local cinema (BioCity in City2). In the background you see a McDonalds sign. Close to McD there is a Sunset sandwich restaurant.

Dark side of Gedser

The city of Gedser is located at the most southern point in Denmark. It features a ferry to Rostock in Germany, and that is about it. Close nearby is however a great area with summer cottages. This picture is taken at 2:15 at night while waiting to enter the ferry. The trip to Rostock takes about 1 hour 45 minutes.

Bird feeders are common in gardens all over. Here I caught a small bird (a kind of tit, probably a great tit) on a bird feeder.

Clean environment

This is from Albertslund, where we have a nice green area with soccer fields, a big hill and plenty of fresh air. It is normal to see garbage containers at places like this. Now the visitors just need to use them.

Wooden Church

Downtown Taastrup we suddenly see a church built in wood and painted white. If I recall correctly it is some orthodocs branch, who uses this church.

Music Nonstop - almost

Summer time is festival time. Denmark hosts several music festivals in the summer. One of the most well known i probably Roskilde Festival not far from where I live.
The picture however is from the just finished Langelandsfestival (Langeland is the name of an elongated island southeast of the island of Fyn; you could call it Long Island, I suppose).
On stage we have Bamses Venner, a Danish band with a Danish attitude, look and sound. The big guy in blue in the center with the bass is called Bamse (Danish for Teddy Bear).

Sunset on the beach

Yeah, I know. Sunset pictures are generally boring. This is probably just another boring sunset picture shot at the local beach. This beach is Ishøj Strandpark, a place I have visited earlier this year, on a freezing day, although the picture was posted in May.
In the picture I am looking at the sunset, the water is behind me.

New and old in Dragør

A new modern Chinese restaurant in the old town part of Dragør. Dragør is located south of Copenhagen, not far from the airport. Almost all buildings in the old town is painted yellow.
Also most of the old town is pedestrian only, so it is perfect for a stroll in the summer evening, since all cars are kept out of the inner town.
Nearby is a harbour with fishing boats and yachts. Several years ago Dragør had a ferry to Lindhamn in Sweden, now you can see Øresundsbron (bridge to Sweden) from Dragør.

Pouring Summer Rain

A very short rainfall, but still a lot of water. The summer this year has been very hot and with almost no rain. Yesterday we did have a short wave of very hard rain. The image shows rain pouring down on the sidewalk.

Viking Shipyard

In the town of Roskilde 40 kilometers west of Copenhagen there is a Viking Ship Museum, called Vikingeskibsmuseet (homepage: http://www.vikingeskibsmuseet.dk/). There they build old ships the same way, the vikings did. You can see a lot of different sea wessels, including viking longships.

Too much lamp oil :-) oh well, no one was harmed, and the coals were fine after a while as usual.

From May till August barbequing is very popular on mild, warm or even hot days. Mostly Danes prepare sausages, ribs and the occasional steak and chicken legs. Corn and bread is often done on the BBQ as well. On the side we serve mixed salad and or potato salad (cooked peeled potatoes in a creme fraiche dressing).

Moon in daylight

The moon is always a popular object to photograph. Using my 200 mm zoom lens it is possible to get at least some detail, however it is almost impossible to avoid shaking. My next lens should have anti-shake, vibration reduction, image stabilizer, or whatever the companies decide to call to it.
The green lines in the picture is electric wiring. I used manual focus, because auto-focus simply can not figure out what to focus on.

Last years apples

The delicious fruit we all can grow in Denmark. This is a rather early (pre-mature) specimen, but later they got bigger and plentyful. Apples are good for freezing, making specialties (like apple pork, danish: æbleflæsk, essentially sliced pork fried, with onions and apple, served warm on dark bread).
Apples are usually ready in September.

All too common

Just an all too common place to live. There is nothing wrong having a home in any of these apartments. But everything just looks so dull. Places like these exist everywhere, I guess.

Yellow BMW

Couple of weeks ago I was attending a hobby fair in Copenhagen. The fair showed model railroads, model cars, radio controlled cars, trucks and combat tanks, fork lifts and front loaders, there was also dolls and paper art, like origami. This yellow BMW was one of the models on display. This is a scale model for show off only, ot is not an RC Car.

A small funfair runs once a year i Brøndby Strand, it is a single day called, Store Legedag = Great Playday. Several organisations, like scouts, sport clubs etc. show what they do, and there are plenty of cool things for the kids to try.
This small train drove around the premises as one of the things to try.

Old style S-train

The red S-train is a sure sign you are close to Copenhagen. The pictures shows the old style S-train. Many commuters use the S-train in stead of lining up in the queues on the overloaded roads.

Snowy beach

Spring time shows it face

Not only do the flowers like crocus and snowdrop show up in our gardens as a sign of spring time is near. Another sure sign is the working man showing up, now is the time to change those windows, fix the roof and paint the woodwork. Here I spotted a couple of guys working in early April. Yeah, spring is finally coming!

Trash and burn

Garbage is sorted and recycled depending on it's nature. What can not be sorted or recycled is burnt. The heat generated is used for heating homes in the area.
This is a plant where garbage is burnt. Nearby is a sorting station where citiziens and companies can drop off their garbage and sort it themselves.

Wooden Bear

It could have been a name of a native american Indian Chief, Wooden Bear. But in this case it is simply a bears head cut from a tree trunk. It is located in a playground in a kindergarten.

Longhaired cattle in the snow

There is a small animal park in Ishøj. It is located in a green "peninsula" between a couple of highways. The park is home for some cattle and goats. Free admission all year.

The eager for entertainment has hit the Danes as well as everybody else. Most places have cabel TV, but in some locations satelite dishes and antennas are still needed. Either because it is the only option because cabel is too expensive, or because there is need or wishes for special TV programmes.

Not much happens here. It is a slow street in a living quarter in the town of Hvidovre a few kilometers west of Copenhagen. It is a common sight in denmark, those lazy streets bordered by high hedges.

Few minutes before our local Toys R Us opens, people wait in line outside. In Denmark the toy market is dominated by two mayor players: Toys R Us and Fætter BR, both owned by the same company Top Toy. So much for free market.

Reaching for the sky

This is Brøndby Stadium the home of the soccer team Brøndby IF (or BIF for short). BIF is probably the most succesful professional soccer team in Denmark.

Setting up the game

Here we see two teams lining up before a soccer match. The Yellow/Blue are Brøndby IF and the Red/White are the guests from Kalmar FF. The game was played today and ended 2-0 in favour of Brøndy IF.
Soccer is the national sport of Denmark, almost every city has some kind of soccer team, and lot of danes do enjoy the game.

Small tree in a large place

This small tree sits out in the middle, almost, of a large field between a school and a gym hall. It looks like someone just forgot it there, it is no more than 2 meters high.

Cigarettes - no thank you!

Smoking is banned in more and more places in Denmark. Cigarettes, cigars and pibes are not welcome indoor in any public building all over the country.
Outside you see ashtrays like these big concrete ones filled with sand. Smokers have to put out their smelly, unhealthy habit before entering the building. The text means Put Out (danish: skod) in the meaning of putting out you cigarette.
A lot of companies, public and private, are banning tobacco, too. Some allow workers to smoke out in the parking lot, while others does not allow any smoking on their premises, and insist that workers do not smoke in their work time, or limit it to their pauses, where they can leave the workplace for a smoke. Good thing I quit a couple of years ago!

Downtown Copenhagen

This building is typical of downtown Copenhagen. Three to five stories high buildings, often with shops at ground level. This particular building is located in the part of town called Vesterbro. It is right next to the main train station (danish: Københavns Hovedbanegård).
The text on the building reads Kooperationens Hus (english: House of Cooperation), and it houses several different organisations related to labour organisations/unions and the socialdemocratic movement.

A hotdog with everything, please

The hotdog stand (danish: pølsevogn) is seen in many locations throughout the cities. On the menu is various hotdogs, hamburgers, rib burgers, haps dogs, different types of sausages, where the red one is very popular.
Some of the hotdog stands have wheels and a small motor attached. The owner walks and steers the hotdog stand as the motor pulls it.
This particular picture was shot outside the main station in Copenhagen. Across the street you see Tivoli, although not very obvious from this angle.

Snowcovered tree

Winter has it's price. Butts are freezing off, and the scenery gets covered with that white fluffy stuff. Snow, it's called in some places (danish: sne). This tree is located almost outside our door. The blue dome is a container to glass (bottles, jars etc.) for recycling. The sign says "Children Playing".

Icy tree

Last few days of snow and ice has decorated the trees with ice glazing. It looks fantastic, what is not funny is trying to recover the car from underneath a thick layer of ice :-) Enjoy the the nice picture of the frozen tree, while I save up for some defrost for next payday.

This is how the poles beside the road look in Denmark. Usually they carry a sign for each 100 meters. This particular pole is on a turn and is considered an extra one, hence it has no distance sign.

Walking on a quiet street a few days ago, I spotted a snowman on the lawn. Although the season for snowmen is arriving, it was still a bit early considering we haven't seen any snow the last 10 months or so.
Oh well, an inflatable snowman is of course a solution. I guess bad taste is better than no taste.

Video special

So - I, too, have discovered YouTube.com :-) That means I can show a video from Denmark. Although, this is not my own video, I like to show it, because it features one of the biggest and most popular bands in Denmark at the moment: Outlandish.
Long story, short: Outlandish grew up in Brøndby Strand, a multiethnic area west of Copenhagen, the band members comes from three different cultures. The music is a mix of indian, arabic music with a western sound. Very worth listening to.

Beautiful building

This lovely building is located in the city of Frederiksværk in the northern part of Zealand (Danish: Sjælland), the main Island where the capitol Copenhagen is located. In many older areas of Danish cities you can see a lot of pretty buildings of different architectural styles.
This particular place hosts an Internet Café and most natobly an Art Gallerie, called S.P.O.T.

Parking

Parking spaces reserved for handicapped peoples cars are marked by a wheelchair symbol. People allowed to use these parking spaces have a sign in their front window with the blue/white wheelchair symbol.
There have been reports of thieves breaking in to cars to steal these signs, so they themselves can use these spaces. It is a sad world, sometimes.

Extreme advertising

Danish national sport

Flea markets (danish: loppemarked) is very popular. Some sites have ongoing fleamarkets running every weekend, whereas others just throw the occasional flea makret, when they want to clean out their storage.

This dog (danish: hund) was looking through the gate on bypassers out in the street. Like in most western countries, dogs (and cats) are common pets in Denmark.

This ambulance is not really chasing down the elder citizien seen in front of it. It is just in the process of turning around and going backwards down the driveway to the left.
Ambulances in Denmark are usually red/white and flourescent orange, some though are marked with flourescent green/yellow (for instance Copenhagen Fire Department).
This ambulance is from the company Falck which runs most ambulances and fire and rescue operations in Denmark.

We do have plenty of trashcans around, however a lot of trash still tend to end up in peculiar places, like behind fences. Oh well, now we know where it is, and it can not get away.

Apple blossom

This beautiful picture was taken this spring in our garden. Our appletree shows all it's might and beauty every spring with plenty of flowers. Here 6 months later we enjoy the fruit as a lot of fresh apples.

Switchbox ads

This switchbox controls the traffic lights. Often switchboxes are used for poster stands, too, although this is not legal. The bluish poster advertises for two Danish rap bands, Per V and Rent Mel.

Spot the dalmatian

The black and white pattern on the birch tree could easily serve as camouflage for a dalmatian(danish: dalmatiner). If you do spot it please tell me - I may know an optician looking for customers :-). The picture was shot a few days ago. Birch trees are very common in Denmark, and are often seen outside houses and in gardens.

Yellow Rose of Taastrup

Last summer I fiddled around with the macro function and took pictures of some flowers in the garden. This yellow rose is one of the best.

Small store

A store, part of COOP, one of the two large chain of stores in Denmark; the other chain is Dansk Supermarked. There is a few other smaller chains of independent stores, too. In a short while we will also see a large German chain in Denmark: Lidl.
The division of the market between only two major store chains, is usually blamed for the high price level in Denmark. Maybe Lidl can change that, maybe not.

Streamer in the sky

Just shot this one this morning. The weather is fantastic, 20°C, sunshine and almost no clouds in late September. Great :-)
Flag poles are rather common and many people has streamers raised in their flag poles.

Sitting in line again on M3 by the road construction. The signs says 80 km/h and the big sign says queue (danish: kø), usually the maximum speed in queues is 40 km/h.
The electronic signs will remain after the roadwork and wil be used to warn of accidents, jams and other important road conditions.

Hedging

Looking over the hedge from the nearby road in Taastrup. This picture was taken a few days ago on a beautiful, warm September afternoon. I don't know who lives in the house, but I really like the color and style of the house. The leaves make a nice contrasting frame, I think.

Oak leaves

There is a lot of oak trees along the road I live by. These oaks are rather old, and beautiful majestic trees. We hope they will stay for a long time, since we really enjoy them. This picture is shot right in front of our house on a nice summer day.

Sitting in line

On one of the motorways around Copenhagen, the M3, there is a major roadwork. The reason is an extension from 2 to 3 lanes in each direction. M3 (danish: Motorring 3) complicates things by having a lot of intersections.

I caught this on a trip through the town (Taastrup). It made me think about how some people utterly, and completely fail to add some decoration to our common surroundings.

Very nice, romantic scenery. This picture is taken a rather cold autumn day in October last year. Me and my family visited an open land museum, called Frilandsmuseet. The museum rebuilts several eras of Danish history with original houses, usually disassembled and moved from their original location. This pond is located near a water mill.

This rollercoaster is located in BonBon-Land, an amusement park based on characters from a candy company. The rollercoaster is called the Wild Boar (danish: Vildsvinet) and is one of the fastest in Denmark.
I have tried it a couple of times, lots of fun :-)

This picture was taking in Copenhagen in September 2003. It was part of an art event. The footsteps where painted on sidewalks all over the town. This photo was shot in front of Copenhagen Central Station (danish: Københavns Hovedbanegård).
